Series "Wau" - May 2019 - Wau, Bahr El Ghazal, South-Sudan
In May 2019, I was commissionned by the Johnanniter International Assistance to document its programs the region of Wau. Wau only has a few donzens of thousands inhabitants, but it is the second largest town in South-Sudan, the youngest country in the world. While the town center is pretty safe, and gathers most of the regional offices of the NGO actives in the region, the surrounded villages are often attacked by armed groups.
I selected not only pictures from the programs I documented, but also from surroundings places, such as the IDP camp where four thousand people recently arrived after fleeing their home. Whoever went to South-Sudan knows it’s not easy to take pictures outside a pre-determined location. Anyway, through these dozen pictures, I hope to give an understanding of the situation in Wau, South-Sudan.
To give reasons why to be worried, and to give reasons to have hope.
